Week 15 - Kalgoorlie - Where you'll find the Super Pit
It only took a short half hour drive from our last stop at Coolgardie to reach our next stop which was of course the famous gold mining town of Kalgoorlie.
We weren't sure what to expect from this place, it was great to see that what was once an exclusive gold-mining town is now a family friendly hub of activity, and being a large town, we found all the usual shops we needed to do a bit of restocking, as well as heaps of touristy things to do.
We were all keen to go and visit the enormous mine that they call the Super Pit. We discovered that it is 3.5km long and 1.5 km wide and 600 metres deep. It's actually so big that can be seen from space!
Even though the mining equipment is absolutely huge, looking down into the Super Pit the big trucks look like pieces of Lego compared to the large opencut mine landscape.
There was also a lovely park with awesome play equipment, a huge range of interesting birds in an aviary, a gorgeous hand made miniature stone castle, and lush green grass which was a beautiful contrast against the red dirt.
Thankfully, the caravan park we were staying at had a pool as the forecast was to be 38 degrees the whole few days we were there. It was a welcome relief.
After settling in, it was time for us to do a bit of work and school, so we set up the iLogic4G+ system and did a couple Sim tests. We found the best reception was through Optus which was great as I had a lot of data left on that plan for the month. Knowing which Sim to use certainly made working a lot easier.
